Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Q&A - Ships and Vehicles

I just double checked the updated (and original) dev posts and still got no clarification on how can you land a ship when you have an SLF active?

I hope they handle this by allowing all SLF´s to have a "hover-ability" to keep them a float just meters above surface like hovercrafts, and thus land at below much bigger ships.

That way also pilot talent comes relevant, and if extended (through range of SLF´s or adding hover function on other smaller or even bigger ships), could add more into a exploration (think of the gliders and racers of Star Wars).

I hope they allow the SLF to land independently so it's pilot can get out just as the SRV driver will, Russian Doll style ;)

The more I see about Odessey, the more I worry that it is basically just FPS grafted onto the Elite game with little or no tie in. I don't think it will hit the "combined arms" levels of Dust and EVE. It just seems to be new ways to grind, and engineering suits rather than ships. And we're not even getting new SRV's to work with...

Excuse me but I happened to play EvE Online and Dust in it´s very limited Factional Warfare areas...

In what way it were connected to space aspect of the EvE, again???
It were totally disconnected console shooter, not even available on PC lol (where EvE Online space-pilots are).

I mean except some statistics where some number in a random FW system went up just a bit even to notice, while you could do it 100x easier in space orbiting a beacon 10 mins.

Good stuff! But we need some more types ground vehicles, they don't even have to be deployable from a ship, maybe just like a garage in an outpost type deal. I'm sure people would be grateful.
And also other things like a better HUD developed for the players also missions and exploration of sites and other such fun.....

I always love these "combined arms" dreams from people, be it in SC or now in ED.

Adding spacelegs to the game, allowing you to be a Cmdr rather than a ship, has been the goal for years. As far ago as the KS it was pitched as two distinct dlcs: walking around ports and planets, and another for walking/boarding ships. The first one is what we are getting now.

So puh-lease put all those grand and child-like ideas about Hollywood-esque combined arms invasions of planets away. You will be able to walk and shoot on foot, which is a pretty highly anticipated feature they will add for a couple of tenners. That's cool. And that's all.

"Combined arms" usually doesn't mean sending a single rifleman to fight a battleship. 😁

Frontier have said they want to keep the sphere of combat balanced, I kinda hope it won't be.

Yeah wonder how they are gonna solve that "man with a bazooka can take out a battleship" balance thingy, that we can see in other games also, even in Civilization´s and it is just a strategy game!

True.

And eva/boarding especially is a complete rewrite of the instancing system.

I played both too, and the big selling point was that squads in Dust who were working with PC based capsuleers could call down air strikes, and fleets at war in a system could hire squads of mercenaries to take ground bases. That was the limit of direct interaction, you obviously couldn't use Dust units to take ships as the environments were separate (one on PC one on console), but the actions of one group could be influenced and intertwined with the other.

On the downside I hated Dust as the servers were basically full of foul mouthed console kiddies who ganked everything in sight...

Thanks for the answers but, and it's a big but.

Why has the question, will we get more types of SRVs not been answered?

It's the question most people want to know. Over 5 years and we still only have the one type, surely you have to be adding more with Odyssey.
Agreed, this is a perfect opportunity for a player-controlled, Sentinel-like SRV.

Greetings Commanders!

We have a fresh selection of answers to your Elite Dangerous: Odyssey questions! This week Gareth Hughes has graciously shared the answers you gave us on Ships and Vehicles!

Q: Can a ship and SRV damage a player if I run over them?
Absolutely! An SRV can damage or kill a player if they are not fast enough to get out of the way. This goes the same for AI, though they will do their best to evade you if they see you coming!

Q: Will there be updates to ship and SRV combat, as well as ground combat?
Ship combat and SRV combat is in a healthy place right now, our focus is on ground combat for Odyssey, and ensuring that it is balanced well against vehicles. We will be looking closely at balancing in the upcoming Alpha.

Q: Do player shields affect ships like other ships do?
Players will not be able to ‘ram’ a ship whilst on foot no, though it would be fun to watch someone try.

Q: How will you balance night vision on ships with on foot players?
Night vision will work as it does currently; providing ship Commanders improved vision in low light environments. It is worth noting that ‘on foot’ players will be very small targets for Commanders in ships, and too small for ship weapons to lock on to. However, Commanders in ships will be very big targets for players on foot, making them nice targets for some handheld weapons!

Q: Will the ship launched fighter be used in ground combat?
Yes, all deployable vehicles can be used. A player can choose to deploy in a fighter if they want, with all the benefits and drawbacks that will provide.

Q. Will we be getting an addition to the ship HUD? As seen in the gameplay reveal, we will have a compass. Surely to make things easier to communicate between players on foot and in ship/SRV a North directional indicator should appear on your radar when in orbit around a planet, or in atmosphere.
The current HUD for ships in Elite Dangerous provides all the relevant information that Commanders will need in Odyssey.

Q. Will spaceships be able to deploy anti-personnel/vehicle bombs/missiles?
We have no plans to add specific anti-personnel ship weapons. We’ve put a huge amount of work into ensuring the combat triangle remains balanced and fair. Ships will however have creative opportunities to use their existing arsenal…

Q: Will we be able to drop in from our ships or do we have to leave and exit the ship like normal during combat situations?
In order to deploy from your ship Commanders will need to land first.

Q. Can we engineer our SRVs?
There will be extensive engineering options for suits and weapons in Odyssey, however there are no plans to engineer SRVs

Q. When doing a multiple vehicle assault, is it possible for player crew members to drive SRVs from the ship they don't own? Similar way to launching a SLV is now?
Absolutely! For instance, there would be nothing to stop a Commander in an Alliance Crusader have 1 of their multi-crew teammates deploying in a Ship Launched Fighter, landing and deploying the other multi-crew teammate in an SRV, before heading in on foot themselves.

We are very excited to see how Commanders team up to complete missions in Odyssey!

That's it for this week. Keep an eye out for more Elite Dangerous: Odyssey news in future!

Well ... not very reinsurancing news. Goooc at evading key question and nothing new. It looks like a big fire smoke without actually big fire. Disappointment will be strong for game play and will only enjoy in 2025 on console... good job

Can we Flight together or 2-3 people in a ship and walking in the ship ?
on the latest odysee update ? Have anyone a answer ?

No walking on ships...
You could try reading the existing reveals in the News & Bulletins section, there is all we know about the expansion so far written (and in movies) there, it is worth the time spent.

Will ship thrusters have any affect on on-foot play, SRV's and installations?

We have these immensly powerful, fucussed, directional, nuclear furnaces, that can shift tons of metal at high accelerations and speeds.
Will they have any affect on play? (beyond the ship maneuverability)

Will Thrusters cause direct damage?
Will atmospheric effects caused by Thrusters, such as strong winds, affect on-foot play? e.g., movement - players / litter / grenades being blown around.
Will Thrusters of different sizes (small - large) or engineering have different effects?

If not, what is the lore justification for this?

Will ship shields have any affect on on-foot play, SRV's and installations?

Ships shields stop physical objects from entering the volume they enclose, rebuffing bullets, rail gun rounds, missiles and other munitions.

Will shields prevent on-foot players and SRV from encrouching on a ship that has shields activated?
Will shields push / crush on-foot players/npc and SRV? e.g., at the boundary of the shield envelope, before the ship hull.

If not what is the lore justification for this?

I bet they take a leaf out of one of Frank Herbert’s books:

The shield turns the fast blow, admits the slow kindjal!

(or if you prefer Patrick Stewart’s movie version:
“...the slow blade penetrates the shield.”)
