Release Elite Dangerous HUD Mod (EDHM)

Hi CMDR,

Make sure you read the installation section in the manual as it covers some common issues for when the mod doesn't work. If you still have any probs then feel free to send me a PM and we can sort it out. If I'm not online then come over to the discord and someone should be able to help you
Oh I've read the install file, the pdf etc, and installed everythingn right where it said to install it. I haven't made any changes to my graphics profile at all in the game, but the mod doesn't do anything for me. Won't even apply one of the demomods. I can't use discord due to bandwidth limitations.

edit Ok, after I had to restart my computer and reload the game, now it's working fine.

Ok, can you please PM me a screenshot or snippet (press windows key, type 'snip') of your elite-dangerous-64 folder? You can PM it here or directly through discord (psychicEgg#9971). I can usually tell what the issue is by looking at your e-d-64 folder

Also, there's many CMDRs who run multiple installations of Elite on their C: and also an external drive, and often they install EDHM into the alt's folder instead of the main's folder. If you run a Steam installation you can confirm your e-d-64 folder by right clicking on Elite Dangerous in Steam, go to Properties, click Local Files, then Browse. In the Windows Explorer window that pops up, click Products, then elite-dangerous-64 .. and you should see all the mod files in the folder that loads

I got it working. I had to reboot my computer and then it ran just fine. No clue why, but my computer is a fussy thing and gets weird sometimes. Anyway, it's working great now.

Hi CMDR!
I did not start game with it yet, but already love this addon.

I'm just getting a little issue of understanding, could you please explain how we change a specific element in XML?
I used EDHM UI to tweak to the best I could but cannot find a way to select signature bar

what do I do with these? or where in the files are the section to change colors manually?

Thanks in advance.

Hiya, I recommend reading the Manual as it explains all the basics of what you need to know. The Manual and Profile Guide are in the elite-dangerous-64 folder, or on the EDHM GitHub

But just briefly, in the EDHM-ini folder you'll find the file Startup-Profile.ini, which controls the colours in the front HUD, and XML-Profile.ini, which contains 3 colour matrices that control the Ship panels, Station panels, and portrait correction. The XML topics are covered in detail in the Profile Guide, but I recommend reading the Manual first

I don't use the UI myself so I can't help with that (you'll need to have a chat with Blue Mystic on the EDHM discord), but to change the Signature Bar manually, open Startup-Profile.ini in a text editor, and scroll down to

Change w106 = to your preference, then press F11 to reload the change in-game

Edit: Just in case the wording in the UI causes any confusion, you can't choose custom colours for individual elements. You can create an XML theme (see examples by pressing CTRL 5,6,7,8,9) and then apply that XML theme colour to any element you want, but you can only have one XML theme active.

In the next Advanced version of EDHM you can set the RGB colours of every individual element separately

ah I get it, so the XML is global for all you select the XML right?
any set in 199 will be the same style right?

Henlo commanders.

Just wanted to drop a note that I appreciate all of psychicEgg's work on this, and offer up some testing cycles or whatever resources the Empire can offer to help.

The new lighting is even darker in my beloved Clipper. It's as if all the lights shut off in the galaxy.

Hi, sorry for the slow reply, I had a lot on yesterday.

Yeah that's it exactly. If you were to put the XML matrix into graphicsconfiguration.xml, the result would be same (nearly) as setting each element to 199 (XML colour option) in Startup-Profile.ini

In the Advanced Odyssey version you'll be able to set the RGB values for each element, but it will take a long time to configure

I hope you're enjoying the mod!

I am, I really am, thanks a lot for your hard work !

Just a few questions, I've read that it conflicts with steam overlay is that right?
If so is there any way to get this fixed in any way? Ctrl+Shift+Tab isn't working anymore.
Is there any way to remap the reload (F11) key?
how am I going to do screenshots without overlay? I've mapped Ctrl+F9 for screenshots and it doesn't work anymore ...

You're talking about "Advanced Odyssey version" what is this? is it a future release? or an option to select to access it?

Last but not least,
Is FDev ok with this? Will I get banned for using the mod?
I'm very grateful to CMDR Exigeous who contacted FDev on our behalf. FDev are fine with the mod so long as it doesn't provide an advantage over other players, or mod their ARX-related assets.
Why does FD are not just implementing this natively as this is obviously requested by many.

For those that played space operas for some time Freespace 2 had the whole interface with selectable colors & shapes, that was just perfect.

Just curious if you have a timeframe for the first release for Odyssey? Would love to see it and help tweak any issues found!

Hi, I noticed there is a section in the OP about running this on Linux via Wine, but it doesn't really work for people using Steam to run the game.
Steam uses Proton, which is essentially a special Wine version with some additions, but the way to make it work is very different.
It took me a bit to figure it out so I here are the instructions:

How to install this mod for people playing Elite on Linux using Steam Play (Proton):
  • Download the EDHM-vX.XX.zip from the page linked in the OP
  • Open your steam library, right click on "Elite Dangerous", click "Properties"
  • In the "General" tab, copy the following into the "Launch Options" box:
    Bash:
    WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d11=n,b;d3dcompiler_46=n" %command%
If you're curious what this does, it basically makes Wine use the DLL files provided by the mod instead of ones provided by Proton
  • Open the "Local Files" tab, and click "Browse...". This should open the game installation folder in your file manager.
  • You can close the preferences window now, we won't need it anymore.
  • Go into Products/elite-dangerous-64/. Unpack the zip archive there.
  • You're done! The next time you launch Elite you should see the default EDHM theme.

Tips & Tricks:
  • If you want to access the game directory more quickly, go to your Steam library, right click "Elite Dangerous", go to "Manage" and "Browse local files".
  • The manual tells you in a few places to run one of the .bat files, but those generally don't work on Linux.
Here's how to replicate what each file does manually (as of v1.51):
    • EDHM-Keybinds-Essential.bat
      1. Go into Products/elite-dangerous-64/EDHM-ini/KeyBinds/
      2. BACKUP FIRST IF YOU MADE ANY CHANGES
        Delete KeyBinds.ini
      3. Copy KeyBinds-Essential.txt and rename it to KeyBinds.ini
    • EDHM-Keybinds-Full.bat
      1. Go into Products/elite-dangerous-64/EDHM-ini/KeyBinds/
      2. BACKUP FIRST IF YOU MADE ANY CHANGES
        Delete KeyBinds.ini
      3. Copy KeyBinds-Essential.txt and rename it to KeyBinds.ini
    • EDHM-RemoveDemos.bat
      1. Go into Products/elite-dangerous-64/EDHM-ini/DemoProfiles/
      2. Delete DemoProfiles.ini
      3. Copy NoDemos.txt and rename it to DemoProfiles.ini
    • EDHM-RemoveDemos.bat
      1. Go into Products/elite-dangerous-64/
      2. Backup the EDHM-ini folder if you have customized your settings and think you might ever use this mod again
      3. MAKE SURE ELITE IS NOT RUNNING OR YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO DELETE SOME FILES
      4. Delete the following files and folders:
        1. d3d11.dll
        2. d3d11_log.txt
        3. d3d11_profile_log.txt
        4. d3dcompiler_46.dll
        5. d3dcompiler_46_log.txt
        6. nvapi64.dll
        7. nvapi_log.txt
        8. d3dx.ini
        9. ShaderUsage.txt
        10. EDHM-v1.5-Catalogue.pdf
        11. EDHM-v1.51-Manual.pdf
        12. EDHM-v1.51-Profile-Guide.pdf
        13. EDHM-Keybinds-Essential.bat
        14. EDHM-Keybinds-Full.bat
        15. EDHM-RemoveDemos.bat
        16. ShaderFixes
        17. ShaderCache
        18. EDHM-ini
        19. EDHM-Uninstall.bat

In case GeorjCostanza wanted to include this in the OP, I have attached a file with with a version of this that could be copy-pasted into the FAQ section (make sure to switch the post editor into BB code mode first).

No it's an issue with the modding software 3Dmigoto, which someone else developed. As far as I understand he has no plans to update the software

Is there any way to remap the reload (F11) key?

Yes you can modify, remove, add keybinds. Please see the Keybinds section in the Manual
As for F11, navigate to the DevMode folder (in the EDHM-ini folder), and open Dev.ini in a text editor. Can F11 (on both lines) to whatever key or key combo you prefer. See the Manual for a list of valid key names

how am I going to do screenshots without overlay?

Use the in-game screenshot function (F10; or alt-F10 for very high-res screenshots in solo or private group modes only). Or use the PrtScn key on the keyboard

You're talking about "Advanced Odyssey version" what is this? is it a future release?

Yep, it's a future release, after I restore the current mod in Odyssey

Why does FD are not just implementing this natively as this is obviously requested by many

I'm not really sure! I don't hear any feedback from FDev. I wish they would too. Even ARX HUD colours would be a step forward, plus they would make money

I see how now can be an hassle, but looking forward in the future, i could be a better idea to open a new thread for Odissey, and keep this one for ED and Horizons.
One day EDHM will work on Odissey and here will be user discussing different problems and seeing different updates.

Just a suggestion :)

Hi CMDR,

Sorry I forgot to reply earlier! This is a good idea but I don't have time at the moment to be checking multiple posts, I barely have time to check into here and discord, reddit, youtube etc. But it's a good suggestion

Hi CMDRs,

Here's a beta test for the Odyssey: In-flight Lighting Rebalance, and Skybox Tool

Alert: Based on early feedback, there is an issue with the new shaders and AMD gfx cards.

Download Beta 2 from: EDHM GitHub (this is a second version that might improve the situation for AMD users)
(Note: These Odyssey shaders may not be compatible with AMD gfx cards. There is no need to post images of bugs if you have an AMD card as we already know about them. I'd much prefer to hear if you're an AMD user and it is working for you)

To install: Unzip into the elite-dangerous-odyssey-64 folder (not the elite-dangerous-64 folder, this mod does not work in Horizons)

To uninstall: Double-click the file EDHM-Uninstall.bat while Elite is not running

In-flight Lighting Rebalance:

There are three brightness shaders (I call them 'brightness' but technically they all do slightly different things), and you can configure the values in Custom.ini (in the EDHM-ini folder)

If you'd like the HUD brighter, I recommend going into the right-side panel / Ship tab / Pilot Preferences, and set Interface Brightness to maximum. That will really boost the HUD. Note: By default, this Interface Brightness setting is lower than in Horizons (well, for me it was).

Also modded are bloom, green levels, and I've included an option to restore the blue shield from Horizons

Another shader (not included) controls the maximum limits on the brightness shaders - it's the same shader that adjusts your 'dark vision' as you walk into darker areas. I didn't mod that shader as it can throw everything out of balance. But hopefully this brightness level is enough.

Please note: There is a separate set of lighting shaders for on-foot. I didn't mod any of these shaders as some people might complain about an unfair advantage if CMDRs running EDHM can spot their enemy slightly earlier than with vanilla Odyssey. If you can find a way to contact FDev and get approval to make on-foot 10% brighter then I'll gladly do it.

Also note, bloom and green levels are universal, so their effects will carry over to on-foot. Reduced bloom and green level will slightly reduce brightness, so keep that in mind.

So far the Odyssey shaders had to be extracted in Assembly instead of HLSL (shader language). I find it very difficult to mod in assembly, so if you see any bugs then please let me know.

Bugs to look for:
  • The brighter lighting turning on or off unexpectedly
  • Brighter lighting while on foot (please PM me, for the reason outlined above. I don’t want the mod to cause any controversy)
  • Flickering

It's quite difficult to check the FPS impact of this mod as Odyssey FPS is generally all over the place. But if you notice any particular situation where the FPS is dropping more than normal, then please take a screenshot with the FPS showing (press CTRL F), and re-load the game without the mod and take another screenshot in the exact same position showing a higher FPS. Thank you

SkyBox Tool

The Skybox tool allows you to adjust:
i. The mode (three Odyssey modes, Horizons space fog mode)
ii. Brightness of the nebulae and core
iii. RGB levels of the nebulae and core (many people like to turn the red levels down a little)

The values I use are listed in each section in Custom.ini, and these are turned on by default. If you want to completely remove the Skybox Tool then delete afcd950ead4ecd33-ps.txt from ShaderFixes

General Mod Controls

F11
to reload the shaders in-game after you adjust a value in Custom.ini.
You can change this keybind in Dev.ini

F1 disables the mod (hold F1 to disable, so you can quickly check what the game looks like without the mod).
You can change this keybind in Custom.ini

Suggestions, bug reports, comments, please add them here

o7

PS. In Startup-Profile.ini I’ve also included controls to turn off Supercruise speed lines, and space dust in both flight modes

EDHM front HUD colours coming this weekend (hopefully!)

Please keep in mind this is a beta test, so sorting out these sorts of things is expected
