"Console development continues behind the scenes with an Autumn release still on schedule"

Just to clear up some confusion: Neither Sony nor Microsoft requires new games to be playable on previous generation of consoles, nor existing games to continue support indefinitely. Developers are at complete freedom to choose which platform and which generation to support, so Frontier is also at freedom to stop supporting Xbox One and PS4 if it turns out that Odyssey can't run on those consoles. There is really no obligation there. What a company chooses is completely up to them, and the only people to judge them for that are the customers, not the platform holders.

So in practice, Frontier has the freedom to choose not to release Odyssey on Xbox One and PS4, only on Xbox Series X|S and PS5, if they declare that it's the only way the console experience can be adequate. Since their "console plans" are completely up in the air right now, I think that's a very real possibility, if they ever decide to develop Odyssey for consoles.

I think its going to depend on how well they can get the game to run (through optimisation) on the minimum pc requirements
if it goes well we might get a console version

I'm of the opinion a console version will come, but feel it will be too late by then as all the extra content for odyssey will be released by then and consolers will have moved on, FDev must have an eye on starfield

Yeh console seems to just getting less and less priority at FDev on Elite unfortunately. I kinda understand because Odyssey on PC is in the place it is right now but, it just bumps consoles further and further on the back burner.

Then with Arf yesterday on stream apologising to PC players for 'rough around the edges 1080p' assets for the new planets on the screenshots.

I was like yes, noone seems to even consider PS5 at FDev on Elite when this 'rough' 1080p is all we can hope for.

Just heaps more and more disappointment on top for PS5 players.

you PS guys got anything similar to elite, present or coming?
Nope, I've crumbled and ordered a new gaming PC.

Having said that I still want the console version of EDO to be the best it can be on all platforms. Hope......

I was thinking about this (still am) as I need a new laptop anyway
but I just want an easy life you know? I don't want to be worrying about drives and bindings and intricate settings, I just want to plug n play

I've been doing the CG this week and have only crashed to front screen once & my alt has just got to colonia, there's still stuff for me to do in Horizons providing there's no more broken updates

There's definitely a sense of the end here though

CP2077 should be anytime now really (second half of 2021)
I've read that it's already pretty good on the series x but yea, fancy waiting for the update

Hehe yeh even the current version on PS5 isn't stuck at 1080p and runs well even if I was disappointed with the gane.😉

I'll definitely be replaying it on PS5 when the current generation patch drops. I suppose CDPR did promise SX/PS5 support. FDev never did. 😟

you VMs have (I would have thought slightly) better communications with the CM team, have you or @BongoBaggins asked about consoles at all?
is it a taboo subject ?

I can only echo Mr Baggins here. We know only what everyone else in the community knows. I've asked in other channels.

so silly isn't it, I like to think us consolers are a laid back bunch and will take any info in good faith and in a chilled way (unlike the pc brigade who loose their shizzle at every opportunity)
I believe it's why there's been very little noise from us, it's more a case of we'll move on quietly and not make a big deal about it

which is a shame

There are less of us than the PC brigade so we have fewer loose canons who are willing to post open lettters from Mr Angry.

Honestly no that's just PC players. Don't get me wrong. I criticize fdev all day long, and I wouldn't hesitate to throw them under the bus in this this case too but there is not one single gaming franchise that isnt infected by this insufferable superiority complex.

I'm moving quietly onto Microsoft Flight Simulator....laters-)o7.

My problem with this "we will look at consoles in the future" mentality is the question of when. When will they consider Odyssey on PC to be in an adequate state? When will they say "ok, we fixed everything, we put every new feature we wanted in, now it's time to start development on consoles"? Elite is a service-based game, it's never "complete" or "ready" by design. When does a developer consider such a game ready for porting? I have doubts they can ever say it's complete and ready, because there's always something to do with such a title, either fixing more bugs or creating brand new features and ideas.

The question should probably be better phrased as 'When do we need to start looking at the console build so that we can meet our shareholder's expectations?'

Well it's clearly just before the next financial year: much like Odyssey got pushed out to meet this year's shareholders expectations.

I agree us console types are probably too chill, and just move to another game when the current one no longer satisfies, so avoid obvious fuss and noise mostly.
For example being polite didnt really get us very far with the Cobra MK4 discussion, and trying to raise it on the general (PC) forums would just get hijacked and ignore the PS4 circumstances.
All conflated by CMs not engaging with us...

So i'm not encouraged by statements from FDev about a console version, i doubt it'll be this year and suspect it'll be rushed out next year. Then the content we'll get will be similar to what is now, which each needs to judge how much one will enjoy it. But for me is discouraging to play Elite right now or even if/when Odyssey launches.
I really hope i'm wrong, but words mean nothing as they say.

Sadly the console situation is becoming ever more aligned with the macOS experience. Whether by design or accident, Frontier have allowed a situation where console users are incentivised to get a gaming PC if they want to play Odyssey in the near future.
